How to See Who Unfollowed You on Instagram Without Risking Your Account

Instagram does not provide a built-in list showing exactly who has unfollowed you.

And because of that, in the past we have had to turn to sketchy third-party apps that ask for our username, password and other login details.

But there’s a way to see who unfollowed you on Instagram without using one of those sketchy apps that asks for your login details.

It takes a few extra steps, but I will walk you through the whole process step-by-step.

Step 1: Export Your Instagram Data

Open Instagram on your phone and head to the menu in the top-right corner.

From there:

  1. Open Accounts Centre
  2. Select Your information and permissions
  3. Tap Export your information
  4. Select Create export
  5. Choose your Instagram account
  6. Select Export to device

Then, tap Customise information.

You’ll see a list of all the data points you can export.

Tap Clear all and then select Followers and following.

Once you’ve selected followers and following, change the date range to All time and set the file format to JSON.

Then hit Start export.

Instagram will prepare the file and send you an email when it’s ready. This will normally only take a few minutes.

Step 2: Upload Your Data to FollowBuddy

  1. Once the export is ready, download it and head to FollowBuddy.com.
  2. Create an account, then select Upload new data, and add the JSON file you exported from Instagram.

And that’s it, FollowBuddy will show you everyone you currently follow who doesn’t follow you back.

NOTE: In this list you will also find people whom you follow but had never followed you back, so technically they didn’t ‘unfollow’ you.

Important: How FollowBuddy Actually Works

Your first data upload creates a snapshot of your account in FollowBuddy at that particular moment.

Whenever you upload your data again, you will be able to see who has unfollowed you since your first upload.

For example:

  1. Let’s say you upload your Instagram data today. This creates your first snapshot.
  2. You then upload new data after three to six weeks, although there is no fixed time frame.

Follow Buddy will compare the two snapshots and show you who has unfollowed you during that period.

Is This Safer Than an Instagram Unfollower App?

Absolutely yes!

This method avoids giving a third-party service your Instagram username, password or direct account access.

Which makes this less risky than apps that ask you to log in with your account.

Is FollowBuddy Free To Use?

FollowBuddy does have a paid plan, but they offers a free trial, so you can test the service and see how it works before deciding whether you need a paid plan or not.

I also reached out to the FollowBuddy team, and they provided a discount code for my readers.

You can use the code below to receive a discount on any of their paid plans.

Discount code: JOSH10

The free trial should be enough to get started, whilst the paid plans may be more suitable if you want to upload new data regularly and track unfollowers over a longer period.
